Hospitalisation for Philip

An unexpected event occurred when Philip had to be admitted to Fremantle Hospital yesterday. This was the hospital where Pam trained 50 years ago. Philip was experiencing a lot of pain due to urinary retention because of benign prostate hypertrophy. It had been diagnosed some years ago and had given him no trouble since then. Following a bladder scan in the emergency department he had catheter drainage. and was admitted overnight to check if kidney damage had occurred and ensure resolution of renal function. He was discharged this morning having established that kidneys had returned to normal functioning with a catheter left in place for at least the next week or so and is required to drink 2 litres of water per day for at least 2-3 days.It was confirmed that he does not have prostate cancer and was placed on a new medication called "Duodart" which it is hoped will avoid the need for surgery and hopefully prevent recurrence of this unpleasant and painful condition. We are most grateful to God that this medical emergency occurred while we were in Perth close to medical and nursing care and not in the middle of the Nullabor!

  1. Nasty thing to happen on your vacation but, like you, I'm thankful you had access to excellent care, and that you got good news. May God bless you both. Always in my prayers.
    Love,

  2. Also very thankful that you were close to good medical care when this happened and hope that you do not experience any more "unforseen" events on the rest of your trip!. Love your photos - reliving our trip through some of them. We have just come back from a short trip to Canberra - enjoyed Floriade and the beautiful gardens at Cockington Green. It snowed heavily in Canberra and The Blue Mountains yesterday after 30' temperatures last week! Take care. Love and prayers, Hazel & Graham xo

  3. So sorry I didn't find out about your hospitalisation Phil, until Pam Shanks mentioned it to me on Saturday at my 'party'. We pray that the catheter has worked well and that your kidneys are now functioning normally after the nasty scare. Praise God you were close to a good hospital - and not travelling across the Nullarbor - when this medical emergency occurred.

Had a wonderful day on Saturday and so many lovely memories. Thank you so much, Pam, for the card and loving wishes you sent on behalf of Phil and yourself.
